the listening center

The Listening Center at The Swain Center offers a variety of intervention methodologies/programs designed to improve listening skills. Used as a complementary intervention to speech and language therapy these interventions have resulted in improvement with communication, social and behavioral skills. It is through the therapeutic application of sound that social, behavioral and communication changes are facilitated.

The intervention methodologies are offered as both home and in-clinic programs. Each program is individually designed depending on the client's individual needs.

The Tomatis Method

The Tomatis Method is based on the original research and development of Dr. Alfred Tomatis who pioneered the field of the therapeutic application of sound. The Tomatis Method has been shown to improve communication, and effect positive social and behavioral changes.

The Tomatis Method is the combination of art, science and engineering that improves one's ability to perceive the full range of frequencies that result in improved listening. Improved listening can result in improved processing and learning.

The Tomatis Method is the application of psychoacoustically modified or modulated sound. The Tomatis Method utilizes advanced technology to transmit gated and filtered sound to the listener's ear through headphones.

The Tomatis Method has proven to demonstrate improvement with skills of:

Samonas Sound Therapy (SST)

SST has combined the principles of The Tomatis Method with advances in technology and engineering to develop psychoacoustically modified recordings to enhance listening skills.

The Samonas protocol is written, monitored and supervised by a trained and certified Samonas clinician. The program can be used at home, in a clinic or at school. The listening protocol is developed based on the needs of each client as determined by assessment results. The frequency and duration of listening times will vary depending on each client's unique needs. Headphones and a compact disc player are required.

Interactive Metronome® (IM)

IM combines the concept of a musical metronome with a patented technology program that accurately measures, assesses and improves a person's rhythm and timing. It is the only program that uses a patented auditory guidance system plus interactive exercise to improve the foundational skills essential for learning and development.

The IM program has been shown to produce significant results in children and adults with a wide range of physical and cognitive difficulties including ADHD.
