Communication Risk Factors

Is Your Child at Risk for Communication and Learning Problems?

Nearly 25% of school-aged children experience communication and/or learning problems in varying degrees. As with other childhood problems, communication and learning issues are on the rise and result in children not being able to meet academic and learning goals.

Early identification and intervention makes it possible for children to resolve their skill weaknesses and attain communication and learning success. In order to begin the process early it is necessary to know what children may be at risk. Take a moment to complete the following checklist to determine if your child may be at risk for communication and learning problems.

  • Premature birth
  • Ear infections or ear fluid
  • Jaundice at birth
  • Quiet baby; didn’t babble or coo
  • Often saying huh or what
  • Allergies, asthma, respiratory problems
  • Difficulty being understood by others
  • Difficulty answering open ended questions
  • Difficulty with phonics
  • Poor listening skills
  • Late talker
  • Poor social skills
  • Trouble remembering
  • Frustration with learning
  • Homework hassles
  • Word finding difficulty

If you checked three or more of these items your child may be at risk for communication or learning problems that may affect his/her ability to maximize their academic and communication success. It is suggested that you have your child evaluated by a licensed and certified speech-language pathologist who can perform a comprehensive assessment to determine if a problem is present as well as specify the nature and extent of an identified problem.
